State of the Union

by Kevin  T McEneaney

All birds have been demoted for singing

too early in the morning, also for

appearing in too many lyric poems,

thus, occupying space better given

to distinguished political lobbyists

who wish to be heard above twitter-clicks

when the sun boasts its splendid rays at dawn.

There has been much debate of late whether

adult crows should have their larynx removed,

yet this is an absurd controversy,

a symptom of collective lunacy

in a land that prefers buffoonery.

Well, I’ll go back to drinking Clorox beer,

knowing all will be better by next year!
