Those Ariel Flyers

Violet-tailed sylph

by Kevin T McEneaney

Since we are Johnny-come-lately creatures

on evolutionary chart of life,

we have more wisdom than our feathered friends

who have flown billions of years before us.

Along with our wisdom, arrogance breeds

monstrous and often unfathomable.

We seem to flit from waving branch to branch

when it comes to questions about life.

Perhaps we over-romanticize birds,

perhaps they are as crazy as we are.

If birds sometimes appear to be comic,

then we have inherited that habit,

and for that we should be ever-grateful

that we, too, can do the odd comic dance!
