The secret of life itself

by Kevin T McEneaney

Do you take the air we breathe for granted?

Prochlorococcus means small green berry,

but it’s not a berry, yet it may be

the most populous form of life on earth!

Discovered about forty ears ago

by Chisholm in low-nutrient water,

this microbe absorbs carbon dioxide,

producing oxygen around the clock,

constantly working for us without pay.

They are the ones who produce fertile soil!

Living everywhere on this spinning globe,

it is smaller than a grain of pollen

or even a drop of scented hairspray….

This microbe is the Atlas of the earth!
