Possibilities

by Kevin T McEneaney

It’s possible to live for a hundred years,

although only few people manage that.

A bowhead whale can live two hundred years,

while a zebra finch lives about six years.

Most midges live for only a single day.

*

The number of life forms is dizzying

as number of stars in the universe….

*

We dwell in the midst of a miracle,

and yet some are inclined to destruction,

prejudice, unspeakable violence,

while flowers bloom on the ground around us,

and birds sing their tuneful calls of courtship

as starlight drifts above in the night sky….

*

And yet the heartbeat of cruelty lives on….
