On the tongue

by Kevin T McEneaney

I, who sang of love and chemistry,

now sing the glories of strawberry jam

without maligning other flavored jams.

(I speak of only homemade jams,

not of over-processed store-purchased jams.)

*

The sweet scent of berries cooking in pot

arouses a curious appetite.

We thank the Normans for the word they brought,

as well as the grammar that they gave us.

*

The proof of the labor is in the taste

when at breakfast the jam delights the tongue

with sudden burst of tartness on the tongue,

pleasant tickle-texture of tiny seeds,

that lingering strawberry aftertaste….
