That Day of Thanks

by Kevin T McEneaney

Centuries ago, turkeys filled the sky,

and all one had to do was shoot upward.

Ah, the poor turkey plump on the table,

rich with symbolism and history,

festooned with creamed onions, cranberry sauce,

sweet potatoes with apples, broccoli,

carrots, baguette, gravy, cherry pie,

white wine, sparkling apple juice, or soda.

*

The fat feast of annual abundance

celebrates family prosperity

with brother, sister, cousins, and children

who often prefer dessert to turkey.

*

May your Thanksgiving Dinner be Happy,

delighting in play of words at table!
