Edna St. Vincent

by Kevin T McEneaney

Millay skated on the living room floor

when she was a child living in Maine.

Bright, educated at Vassar College,

she bloomed when she wrote from Paris,

sending letters, poems, to the New Yorker.

She was gifted with exuberant wit,

penning great sonnets under the influence

of William Shakespeare and Louise Labbé.

*

She bought a house in Austerlitz, New York,

falling in love with the geography

and the hobby of landscape gardening.

*

It’s been observed that she drank alcohol,

being a child of Dionysos,

whom all great poets admire, adore….
