An ear to rain and time

by Kevin T. McEneaney

Sleeping with rainfall is a luxury

to be savored like excellent coffee!

Long ago, little could be accomplished

when it rained: carve wood, make love, work leather,

card wool or think of new projects to do.

Reflection was the beginning of thought:

especially of poetry and song.

Rain was immensely important to us

and perhaps earliest prayers were for rain

to water crops, provide drinking water.

Rain brings out what is best among humans.

Children love water-tinkle on their head

and wet water-tickle on outstretched hand—

just like the fleeting grit-texture of sand.
