Thoughts on carbon

by Kevin T McEneaney

All life is born from carbon building blocks

that are assembled and disassembled.

In that sense, your life is not different

from a tree, cat, flamingo, or lizard.

*

Humans tend to think that we are original,

outside of the carbon cycle on earth,

which is why we tend to fear death so much,

rather than accept death as natural.

Instead, we see death as something monstrous…

*

Your dead carbon atoms may become life

in some other form, perhaps a flower,

the root of a tree, or a blade of grass.

*

Your life is a procedure of exchange,

transformation, a process of wonder!
