Purple martins in flight

by Kevin T McEneaney

Wintering down in South America,

they make their first appearance in Houston.

Males and females jointly decide on nests.

A brooding pair will birth three to six birds.

*

Adult plumage takes two years to appear.

Their call may be a chirp, chortle, rattle.

They feed on flying insects and fire ants,

yet pollution has limited their food.

I recall one summer when I planted

bird boxes for them around Stissing Lake….
