Walking on ice

by Kevin T McEneaney

When snow turns to an icy, slick surface

that makes walking difficult to manage

if you are carrying large packages,

the balancing fluid in your cold ears

must work with overtime intensity.

Transporting a large armload of split wood

remains an especially daunting task.

One can’t help but notice footprints in snow:

deer, squirrel, raccoon, and various birds.

One yearns for a half-time meltdown of snow.

The leaping flame in a woodstove offers

both heat and visual entertainment

that can stimulate warm meditation

on the vicissitudes of the winter song….
