Slugs are peaceable creatures of the Earth.
They are reported to move quite slowly.
Never tell a child they are sluggish
because they will take pride in that label.

Like humans, slugs enjoy their heart and lungs.
They prefer to move slowly in damp earth.
The only thing they fear is a gardener
who wields a shovel during Spring planting.

Most poets resemble slugs who choose words
so carefully, it may take a few days
to complete fourteen lines of poetry
resembling the taught pathway of a slug.

The best poets take pride in being slugs.
Slugs improve the quality of gardens.
