When I was a tree

by Kevin T McEneaney

This Christmas I became a Christmas tree

decorated with lights red, green, and blue,

blinking to tell everyone that I was

the Spirit of Christmas cheer to family

and all those who could see me lit up!

Despite my condition, I was sober

as a daring ariel wing glider

hovering above the Rocky Mountains,

planning my Dedalian descent

to consume traditional clove-glazed ham

with children and grandchildren clamoring

like bees over a field of nectar scent.

I recommend to everyone I know:

become a Christmas tree—light up the world!
